First Week Reflections

Motivation gets you started, but it won’t keep you going. . .

This Ship30for30 voyage has been interesting thus far. Each day at sea, I learn more about myself. Here are my reflections so far:

  • Upon first boarding, my work schedule was different. I made plans and created a system to navigate the shark-infested waters. This helped my voyage for the first week.
  • Joining the crew and passengers on the first two live sessions was amazing. The energy and discussions left me rejuvenated. It provided the fuel to keep going.
  • The constant engagement of the passengers in the first week was contagious. Everyone was in high spirits — willing to step out of their comfort zone. Peer pressure can be great.

There’s a Storm Coming!

“Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face”

  • The colossal storm surrounded us unexpectedly on the ninth day at sea, bringing with it a gigantic wave that almost capsized the ship. All hands on deck, we were in for a rough night!!
  • A flock of seagulls trying to escape the winds flew into the control and engine rooms wreaking havoc and destroying equipment.
  • As if that wasn’t enough, the dreaded “MurphyPirates” took advantage of our distress and plundered through our supplies.
  • The ship was left battered — systems down, routines ruined, plans foiled — the scavengers could feel the tide shift. They smelt blood. Was this ship about to go down?

Adjusting the Sails

“It doesn’t matter how many times you fall, all that matters is that you get back up”

  • The replays aren’t the same as the live sessions. The energy in the chat and the breakout room experience cannot be replaced. That’s the price for International cohorts — times don’t suit everyone. I’ll focus on Controlling the Controllables.
  • It’s challenging when engagement has decreased. However, everyone is trying to keep their ships afloat and away from the MurphyPirates. I gotta focus on giving first.
  • Steering this battered ship without a compass, damaged engines and broken masts increases friction. I can’t fix everything until I dock. I gotta focus on the next best action right now.
  • This ship is not going down yet, cos I get to cast votes for the type of person I want to be.
